Tas and Mary Miras grew up with hospitality in their blood — both the children of Greek immigrants who arrived in Australia in the early 1940s, they spent their lives building businesses and community in and around Melbourne's CBD.
As the city's construction boom took hold, Tas and Mary turned their attention to servicing job sites, operating vending machines across Melbourne throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. But it didn't take long to spot a glaring gap: construction workers had nowhere nearby to grab a proper meal or a decent cup of coffee.
"Construction workers are the backbone of this city, and Hard Hats Café has always believed they deserve to be fed well — every shift, every site."
That realisation sparked an idea — a custom-built mobile kitchen that could go where the workers were. And so, Hard Hats Café was born. The first site was Jeff's Shed, now known as the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
Over 30 years later, Hard Hats Café has become part of the fabric of Melbourne's biggest builds — from Marvel Stadium and the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant, to Box Hill Hospital and the current North East Link Freeway Upgrade.
Today, their son Simon has taken the reins — carrying forward the same values his parents built the business on. Three decades on, the commitment remains the same: a decent feed and a hot coffee, wherever the work takes us.
